Pro-independece protests after the Friday prayers were violently met by police and paramilitary forces yesterday. Hundreds of people, mainly youth, had taken to the streets to chant slogans against the Indian rule of IJK. Also an organised protest led by JKLF (Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front) after prayers in Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid clashed with the police. Reports state that about 50 people were injured from bullets, teargas and lathi attacks.
A more constructive approach would be for the police to stand back and allow protesters to make their voice heard. As the police and Indian Army is responsible for a great deal of the violence in Kashmir, we would see less lives lost if the police reduced their share of killings. It would also encourage dialogue between the Indian establidhment and pro-independence activists, a dialogue necessary for peace.
